| 20 | 6 | 2011-05-13 12:33:56 | Carolyn Collins | Hi, Brian! This piece is still available.... HOPE BUILDS BRIDGES On September 15th, 2010 I awoke with a dreamvision and quickly sketched it in my journal to create a future photographic paper collage art piece. Little did I know it was just for this purpose until I got a text on March 15th, 2011 asking if I could create/donate something for this special benefit event. My sleepy handwritten sketch-journal notes from 6 months prior to this request included: "world travelers?... windows to the world?... boat like an Asian slip... misty/foggy… peaceful, still waters… as if having survived a storm." This original dreamvision art piece was a 62-hour labor of love to help those in need, the flood victims in Japan. The collage features 101 photographs I shot in 9 countries, hand printed on archival fine art paper with archival 7-color pigment dye ink. Symbolism lies within each component photograph: | |

| 12 | 14 | 2011-04-06 10:50:09 | Shelly McAllister / Cshells | My name is Shelly McAllister. I've had a deep affinity for Japan since I can remember. Though I've never visited Japan physically, I feel spiritually connected. I was blessed to have lived on an island many years ago (Saint Croix, USVI) and survived Hurricane Hugo which wiped out the island. The experience was not something I'd wish on anyone. My artwork reflects oceanic figures and the Kimono I donated has a "jellyfish" theme - hand dyed and using the batik process. As the years go by, I've seen more and more natural disasters take place and I've made it a point to try to help in any way possible. During the Katrina recovery, I was living in Austin and assisted with those many displaced 9th Ward survivors by assisting with employment searches, transportation and child care. I also taught art to formerly homeless adults. Art and music are true healers and I feel blessed to be a part of this event for Sendai. There is pain in the world and there is also much beauty. May we all carry the spirit of love and peace. | |
| 11 | 15 | 2011-04-06 09:34:39 | Pudgielowe | I am donating and volunteering because when I held an event, people generously helped out. It is time to give back and who more deserving than the good people of Japan!?! | |
| 10 | 16 | 2011-04-05 23:24:26 | Organizer | Hello!! This is to introduce the forum. I am Ixchel Aguilar and one of the co-founders of the event along with other members of the Just-Us League. This forum is to share your story, why you have chosen to participate, donate, perform, or attend. Please share any story you have about Japan and helping heal! It has been very touching to us all to have so many people come together so quickly within a month of March 11th. This fundraiser is truly a grassroots community effort, ALL donation based. Personally, I spent 2 years teaching art in a Tokyo International School and saw much of Japan.I was truly touched by the Japanese culture and the kindness of the people. Japan will forever be a second home for me and a life changing experience. I followed the situation unfolding in Japan through my friend's phone calls and online postings and I was driven to help in anyway possible. Through art we, Just-Us League, are making it possible for many to also share their Love and compassion for Japan. Thank You everyone making this possible, each of you is part of making this possible and we all can have the power to contribute and healing in the world. |
